Dear Michelle,
So when you get a letter from your future self, you are probably gonna freak, because, well that is just what we do. Wish I could tell you that you outgrow your irrational fears, but it only gets worse after kids. Yes, kids….we will get to that another time. Right now it’s time we have a little chat to help you make the most out of your teenage years. Listen up young lady, because these things are important.
First and foremost,
YOU ARE NOT FAT. Stop comparing yourself to other girls at school and stop with all the ridiculous “diets”. Fat free yoplait, a handful of animal crackers and a diet coke does not a well balanced meal make. Believe me, one day you will wake up and realize you would do anything to look the way you do now, so start appreciating how beautiful you are, because you are gorgeous.
YOU WILL NOT MARRY YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART. I know that may be a tough thing to hear right now since you are so in love, but it is true. He is going to grow you as a person. He is going to help you grow in your faith. And he is going to be a great friend. But, at the end of the day, he is just in your life for a season. All the time you spend with him and not with girlfriends, you are going to look back on that one day and regret it. Make more time for girls nights. Make friends a priority, not just a boy.
YOU WILL NOT TALK TO MOST OF YOUR FRIENDS PAST GRADUATION. I know, I know, I am kind of a bummer with all this bad news. Maybe if you had spent more time investing in friendships, then some of them would have lasted. Maybe not though. The truth is after High School, everyone is going to go their separate ways. So many of them go on to do amazing things, and one day a little thing called Facebook will come along and allow you to stay updated on their awesome accomplishments, but that will be the extent of it for most. Work harder at being a good friend.
WORK HARD, CARE MORE. I get it, I get it, senoritis can be a thing. But don’t give up on being young and in High School so quickly. You have some tough roads ahead and believe me, you are gonna have to grow up real fast. There will be time for all that later. Right now you should be enjoying being a kid. I know you think being a grown up is so cool and awesome, but news flash….it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Jobs, Kids, Mortgages, Bills…..it’s not as glamorous as you may think. Stop wishing for college and adulthood, because it won’t be what you expect and you are gonna look back on these days as the “good ol’ days”. Wake up now and appreciate the good days as they are happening.
Sleep over at Christy’s more. Stay up all night talking and laughing. Enjoy waking up to her Dad playing the piano for you guys and taking you out for breakfast at the Classic Cafe.
Enjoy all your inside jokes with Jennifer and the way she laughs at anything and just makes life fun. Watch Empire Records more. Keep up the Birthday Box and continue to celebrate your friendship.
Wednesday nights with Channing at Jack In the Box. They. Are. Priceless.
Go shopping with Melissa and Tiffany more. Spend more time with the “choir kids”.
ENJOY being a teenager.
It’s going to go by so fast Michelle. And if you think you have got problems now, giiiiiirrrrrrrllllllllll buckle UP.
Just remember all this. You are going to mess up. You just are. And it’s going to be ok. Even if you do nothing I just said, it is all going to be ok. God has a plan for you, and once He reveals it you are going to be blown away. So many things are going to happen that you could have never imagined in your wildest dreams. And this time right now in your life, all the people you love and who love you, they are shaping you and molding you into the woman you are going to become.
Don’t rush it.
Embrace it.
And know that you are made for great great things.
Sincerely,
The Older, Wiser and Somewhat Exhausted YOU
If you could tell your High School self one thing, what would it be?

ALWAYS watch more Empire Records. ALWAYS!
I used to work at Classic Cafe. Only for a summer… but enough to make me get a taste of the restaurant life.
I want to go to Jack in the Box with you and Channing! Can we rewind and be high school friends? Because I think I’d like that!

I wrote one of these to myself a few years ago. I wish I could have known then how AWESOME my husband is now–to just RELAX with all the worry about boys in high school (and college) and just enjoy being friends with the guys in my life. 🙂
