I have a little story for you. A few weeks ago, I ordered a calendar for my desk. A tiny little card calendar with our 2016 family photos on them. The package came, I opened it up, the calendar is beautiful, so I immediately went to put it on my desk. Except I came into my office, and saw my desk looking like this…
“Ugh!” I thought. “How did the holidays let me get to this point?!” Because while my house is nowhere near perfect, ever, I can usually find a surface to put a calendar on. Does this ever happen to you around this time of year? You get so caught up in gift giving, wrapping, Elf on the Shelfing, parties, cookie exchanges, etc etc, that you get to the end of it feeling like you need a vacation and a reset – all because of the holidays? I started looking around and realized the disorganization everywhere, small spaces in my home I use every day that have been left to the wayside. “No more!” I thought! Then I thought, “I don’t have time for this!” But with January 1st right around the corner, I decided to make a plan. I would whip my house back into shape… in just one hour.
One hour?
Yes – one hour.
So here’s the plan…
I decided I would tackle 6 areas in my house that I use every day. And I would give myself 10 minutes to quickly organize each area. 10 minutes! That’s it. I set a timer on my phone and did as much as I could in 10 minutes. This is not about tackling and reworking and reorganizing every single space, it was about getting the little things back in order so I could feel a little sanity again.
Basically: 6 Spaces + 10 Minutes Each = 1 Hour to a more organized life.
And I know 10 minutes seems like a crock and you’re like “no way.”
But my desk went from that up there (ugh)… to this:
in 10 minutes…. yeah.
I’m not expecting perfection, but functional would be nice…
So my six spaces are:
- Desk (obviously)
- Purse (Helllllllooooo 85,000 Target receipts!)
- Nightstand (Who needs 30 hair ties at their immediate disposal first thing in the morning? Me. That’s who)
- Makeup Vanity (Tis the season for a bold lipstick. Or 80 of them, all over the vanity)
- Kitchen Junk Drawer (Where random mail went to die…)
- Entryway (Or as it became known – the Target outerwear section after a tornado)
I came equipped with a laundry basket to tote things around the house back to where they belong,a bag for recycling, a fun playlist, and my phone on airplane mode with a 10 minute timer set. No distractions – an hour isn’t much time!
Then I got to work!
At the end I ended up with a bag full of recycling (ahem…that’s embarassing), finally found those earrings I lost before Thanksgiving, and I had a six newly cleaned and freshly organized spaces. Ahhhh.
So here’s my challenge for you – give yourself one hour. One hour, that’s all it took me, y’all! And pick 4-6 spaces you’re using every day that really need some order. Set your timer, turn off distractions. And do it. That way we can all bring in 2017 with a little more sanity, a little less stress, and the perfect pair of earrings you thought you’d lost forever.
Oh! And if you’re starting to un-deck those halls, today, don’t forget to check out my post from a couple weeks ago on how to organize your Christmas decor!
Happy New Year, mamas! Let’s make 2017 awesome. xo
