About 6 months ago we cut the cord. The cable cord. Before you gasp and ask how I get my Bravo fix on a regular basis, don’t worry there is plenty of Andy Cohen still in my life. For us cutting the cord gave us a sense of empowerment to not sit and watch mindless TV all day, but it also gave us the opportunity to be a little more intentional about what we like to watch. If you’re like my husband and I, we generally can agree on a handful of shows to watch and then I veer off into reality TV land while he goes into the more sci-fi/drama department.
Summer always turns into that awkward time for TV. Your favorite shows are on their summer break, you cry because shows you loved (I’m lookin’ at you Two Broke Girls) is canceled and you’re left hopelessly staring at the TV hoping for something great to come on. With so many new services on the market, we’ve expanded from our basic cable mode into other avenues like Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix. More companies are putting out quality television that is giving the way we used to watch TV a run for their money. I’m here to share with you five of the shows I’m loving right now!
House of Cards. Oh, Frank Underwood. You’re one sneaky guy, but you secretly want to love him. After I finished the entire series of The West Wing in 6 weeks, I was anxious for more political drama to be back on my screen. Kevin Spacey is the guy you want to love and hate all at the same time. The slimy political meddling behind the scenes is just crazy. I can only imagine what it’s like in the real Oval Office. HOC is in it’s 5th season and definitely one not to miss.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. – If you love just silliness, this is the show for you. We flew through the first two seasons earlier this year and flew through season three too. You just can’t say no to Titus Burgess, he’s my spirit animal. It’s cute, quirky and just pure joy. You need a show like this to lift your spirits. I think we can all find a little bit of Kimmy in ourselves. Great cameos, Titus does a MEAN Beyonce Lemonade tribute. It’s just fun.
The Handmaid’s Tale. I’m always one to be interested in book adaptations and I just love Elizabeth Moss. This is on of Hulu’s originals and it is so good. You can’t binge watch this yet, new episodes roll out every Wednesday. There are 10 out right now. This one you have to pay attention to or you’ll miss important nuggets of information. I also love that Alexis Bledel is in it. Anytime I can see more Rory Gilmore in my life, well I’m just a happy lady. Also, this isn’t a one and done season, they have already been cleared for a season two!
America’s Got Talent – This is my husband’s favorite summer show, next to American Ninja Warrior. I mean, how many times can you see someone climb the warped wall? AGT has a generous mix of singers, dancers, magicians, ventriloquism – the works! We always hope a singer doesn’t win because there are other shows for that. We were super impressed with some of the up close magic last week, we rewind to see if we can figure out how they did it. This years auditions have been really awesome and great inspirational stories. I can’t wait to see who wins!
World of Dance If you loved So You Think You Can Dance before they changed the format and added All-Stars, then you’ll love World of Dance! J Lo can really do know wrong in my opinion. I’m underwhelmed by the other judges, but the talent is on point. I’ve been following along and there are three categories of dancers who will then compete in a final round to win. Is it me or does anyone feel the need to start taking dance lessons after they watch a show like this? The dedication and determination is always to awe inspiring!
So that’s just some of what I’m watching right now. What are some of your favorite summer shows?
