Not sure about you guys, but our family LOVES a good family game night.
Our game of choice…..
Rummikub! Our family is obsessed.
Truth be told we love any board game, but here is a round up of some of our families personal faves.
Apples to Apples Jr – Apples to Apples Junior, much like the grown up version is a hilarious game of comparisons. The kids version is fast paced and fun while still working on building vocabulary and thinking skills.
Beat The Parents – Beat the parents is a fun trivia game where parents and kids go head to head to see who knows their Disney trivia best. Some of the questions are pretty tough…but my kids LOVE to play and get questions about some of their favorite movies and characters. Every time Megan gets a Toy Story or Tangled question she gets so excited.
Hedbanz – A goofy version of the “What Am I” game, Hedbanz is a game where you ask yes or no questions to guess the card each player will wear on their head. Even though the game is recommended for ages 7 and up, Megan is excellent at this game and it is one of her favorites to play.
Blokus Jr – Blokus Junior is the perfect way to teach kids the art of strategy. Similar to Blokus, the object of Blokus Junior is to get as many pieces on the board as possibly by placing each piece corner to corner.
Candy Land – This was a family favorite even when I was a kid, so I was all too eager to pass it on to my girls the second they were old enough. We can spend hours playing along the gingerbread trails and hoping we draw the card to take us to Queen Frostine’s castle.
Uno Moo – I love this game for Megan as it helps her to work on her colors and matching as well as a little strategy when given the “wild” pieces like the skunk and farmer. The game begins when a child draws five animal pieces from the barn storage unit and hides them behind his or her individual haystack, out of view from the rest of the players. The first animal piece will be played, by placing it on the top of the barn, resting on the barn door. The next player will compare the animals in his or her haystack with the animal at the barn door. If the animal is a BLUE COW, the player could tip the cow back through the barn door and replace it will any BLUE animal or any color COW. The game continues until a player has successfully played all the animals behind his or her haystack.
Rummikub – This game brings back so many fond memories for me and my family. We played {and continue to this day} to play this with my Mimi at our Bay House. Mimi taught Madisyn how to play two summers ago and we bought our own personal one after our last trip to the bay and we have all been hooked. This one is too old for Megan, but she likes to be on a team and participate. It is awesome for Madisyn to work on her numbers and strategies. For those that don’t know the awesomeness that is Rummikub it goes like this… Rummikub has 106 plastic tiles with numbers in different colors and four dark-blue plastic tile racks to hold the tiles during play. The object is similar to rummy card games, combining your tiles in runs (consecutive numbers in the same color) or sets (groups of the same number). The game rolls along at a fast clip, with wild-card joker tiles adding a bit of luck to the strategy needed to win.
Operation – Another oldie and goodie from my childhood, but with a slightly different twist. This is Megan’s absolute favorite. In this game of operation, you are Doc McStuffins, and you help fix Lambie, Chilly, and Hallie’s boo-boos by carefully removing them with tweezers and placing a bandage on the empty space. Of course you have to be careful because if you touch the sides of the boo-boo pocket with the tweezers, a red light will go on, and you’ll get the buzzer. If you are able to remove the boo-boo without getting the buzzer, you get to keep the boo-boo and place a boo-boo bandage over the spot. The player who fixes the most boo-boos wins. Megan loves it because she gets to be like Daddy and fix peoples boo boos.
Zingo – This was Madisyn’s favorite when she was younger and we have now passed on that love to Megan. Zingo brings fast-paced excitement and learning to the classic game of Bingo. Slide the Zinger to reveal picture tiles, make a match and fill your card to win. Images with printed words and two levels of play make this the perfect game to grow with.
Do you and your family love a good board game? What are some of your family favorites? Anything fun we are missing out on?
