When our first above 90 degree day hit, I’ve been counting down the days to fall. I’ll admit very quickly that I’m a fall junkie. Boots, apples, chilly weather, cozy blankets, and pretty colors could easily make every season the best, but alas we have to wait until fall for those beloved things. I wake up every day and work at making my home as cozy as possible, but fall just seems to do the job for me. One of my favorite things to do, is a get a good stovetop potpourri going early in the morning and smell the fall scents all day throughout my home.
I’m sure the moment I said potpourri, your mind went to that strange stuff grandma always had sitting awkwardly on the back of her toilet. You know, the stuff in the shell dish. It usually had super fragrant flower petals and oddly shaped seed pods. This of this as more of a farm to table potpourri. It uses completely natural or fresh ingredients around the house. It’s possibly the best thing you can do during the fall – no, I’m not dramatic ;). I have four favorite recipes I’ve been anxiously awaiting to share.
Coffee Stovetop Potpourri
2 cups of water
2 tablespoons coffee grounds or a small handful of coffee beans
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cinnamon sticks
This scent is probably my favorite. You can use it year round, because, duh – what mom does not LOVE the smell of coffee.
Gingerbread Cookie Stovetop Potpourri
2 cups of water
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon ginger
1 tablespoon vanilla
Apple Orchard Stovetop Potpourri
2 cups of water
1 apple, cut into slices
1 squeeze of orange
1 tablespoon cinnamon
4 cloves
a pinch of orange zest
Pumpkin Spice Stovetop Potpourri
4 cups of water
1 can of pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons of cinnamon
4 cloves
1 tablespoon of ginger
1 tablespoon of nutmeg
1 tablespoon of allspice
1 tablespoon of vanilla
What I like to do is throw all the ingredients into a pot and simmer all day. It’s fool proof.
Enjoy!
